Chess has a reputation problem disguised as a compliment: everyone believes it is the sport anyone can afford.
A board costs ₹500. The apps are free. Two children can just play anywhere.
All true. And all irrelevant to what it costs to build a Grandmaster.
Everything past the board is priced like elite sport — but paid for by families, because chess has almost none of the scaffolding other sports take for granted. No franchise contract. No academy stipend. No salary until you are already one of the best players in the country.
Here is what is actually on the bill
Coaching
A titled coach's time is billed by the hour, and a serious junior trains 40+ hours a week that needs to be sustained for years. It is the largest single line item, and it does not pause between tournaments.
Travel, and a great deal of it
The first norms can be earned at home. The ones that make a Grandmaster, in practice, cannot — ours came from Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Spain and Hungary, and our players win their medals in Batumi, Biel, Almaty, Dushanbe. Each of those is airfare, a visa, insurance, two weeks of accommodation, an entry fee and food, paid months before anyone knows the result.
A parent in the next seat
Most of these players are children. A twelve-year-old does not fly to Georgia alone, so a parent travels too — second ticket, second bed, weeks of lost income, every trip.
Preparation
Engines, databases, a machine strong enough to run them, and sparring partners strong enough to be worth the time.
The body
A classical game can run four to six hours; nine of them in eleven days is an endurance event. Fitness, sleep and sports psychology are training costs, not luxuries.
One domestic campaign, per player

An international trip is several times that. Multiply by a season that runs to eight or ten events.
The part that makes chess unlike almost any other career
Prize money arrives after the title, and every rupee of it is spent before. A player is at their most expensive exactly when they have the least to show a sponsor.
We do our best to support our promising talents. Every rupee that anyone contributes is 80G tax-deductible, and corporate CSR partnerships start at ₹3 lakh.
India already has the talent. What's missing is the funding.
