Chess Is an Endurance Sport You Play Sitting Down

What four to six hours at the board does to the body — and the travelling routine that protects the decisions you make in hour five.

From the outside, a chess tournament looks like the least physical event on earth. Two people, a table, near-total silence. Nothing moves.

Here is what is actually happening inside that stillness. A classical game runs four to six hours. No substitutions, no timeouts, no coach in your ear, no break that stops the clock. For most of those hours you are holding several possible futures of the position in your head at once — five or six moves deep, for both sides — comparing them, discarding them, rebuilding them when your opponent plays something you hadn't weighted heavily enough. One lapse of attention, at any second across six hours, ends the day. Then you do it again tomorrow, nine or eleven times in a row, in a city you flew into two days ago.

Attach sensors to a professional and the cost becomes visible. Studies monitoring players during real games find heart rate climbing and heart rate variability — the beat-to-beat flexibility that signals a relaxed nervous system — falling steadily as the game goes on: a stress response that switches on at move one and never switches off. Robert Sapolsky, the Stanford neurobiologist, has observed that grandmasters sustain blood pressure in the range of competitive marathon runners, for hours, sitting down. Players lose weight across a long event without training for it.

This is the demand nobody in the audience sees, and it is why serious players now train their bodies as deliberately as their openings. Viswanathan Anand's daily cardio is not a hobby. It is what lets him think clearly in hour five, when his opponent no longer can.

What fatigue actually does to your decisions

Chess fatigue does not make you stupid. It makes you impatient.

Psychologists group three abilities under executive function: holding information in working memory, inhibiting your first impulse, and switching plans when the evidence changes. In chess those three aren't merely useful — they are the whole activity. Calculation is working memory. Refusing the move that looks beautiful but loses is inhibition. Abandoning a plan you have nursed for two hours, because the position quietly stopped supporting it, is plan-switching, and it is the hardest of the three.

Tired players don't calculate worse so much as they calculate less. They stop double-checking. They take the move that ends the discomfort of thinking. They stay loyal to a strategy past its expiry date because re-evaluating from scratch is expensive.

Almost every collapse you see in a top tournament looks the same from the inside — not a blind spot, but a decision to stop looking.

A large pooled analysis found that even a single session of aerobic exercise measurably improves all three capacities. Not permanently, not enormously — but chess is decided by narrow margins over long durations, which is precisely the shape of the effect. Wendy Suzuki, whose lab studies how exercise changes memory and attention, puts the useful dose at around 30 minutes of cardiovascular work on most days. Consistency beats heroics: 25 minutes of walking daily does more than two brutal gym sessions a week and nothing in between.

Breathing: the only tool you can use while the clock runs

You cannot exercise at the board. You can breathe.

A 2023 Stanford trial compared several short breathing practices against seated meditation. The clearest winner was cyclic sighing: two inhales through the nose, the second short and topping up the lungs, then a long, slow exhale. Five minutes a day improved mood and lowered resting arousal more than meditation did.

This matters at the board for one concrete reason. Under stress the visual field narrows — it is why people in emergencies fail to see obvious exits. A narrowed field of view is, in chess, a narrowed set of moves you notice at all. The move that saves the game is often on the far side of the board, in peripheral vision, and stress has quietly removed it from consideration. Lengthening the exhale slows the heart and widens the field back out, in about twenty seconds. Use it after your opponent surprises you, before you calculate.

Meditation trains the pause

Amishi Jha's laboratory has spent fifteen years studying people who work under sustained cognitive pressure, and finds repeatedly that short daily mindfulness practice protects attention and working memory across exactly the intervals when they normally degrade. Twelve minutes a day holds the line.

In chess, that protection lives in one small gap: the moment between seeing a move and playing it. Meditation is, functionally, hundreds of repetitions a week of noticing your attention has wandered and bringing it back — the same muscle you use to catch yourself playing on autopilot.

A routine that survives airports

Players travel constantly, often arriving the night before a round. Nothing here needs a gym or more than half an hour.

The travelling player's routine

  • 10 minutes of outdoor daylight on landing and every morning after — the fastest reset for jet lag, and it sets the day's alertness curve.
  • 20–30 minutes of brisk walking or a bodyweight circuit, five days a week, before the round. Not after. After the round, nobody does it.
  • 10 minutes of quiet breath-focused sitting an hour before play. It should feel boring. That's the point.
  • At the board: three cyclic sighs whenever the position turns sharp.
  • After the round: 20 minutes of guided non-sleep deep rest rather than a nap — it restores you without stealing from that night's sleep.
  • Protect sleep above all of it. Sleep is when the day's patterns get consolidated into memory. A player sleeping six hours in round nine is a worse player.
  • One full day per event with no chess at all.

None of this requires equipment, a coach or a gym membership — which is the point. It has to survive a hotel room in Batumi at midnight.

Why the day off is the most productive thing you do

That last point is the one players resist hardest, and the one with the strongest science behind it.

Rest is not idleness. When you stop aiming attention outward at a task, a network of brain regions called the default mode becomes active — the system tied to consolidating memory, connecting distant ideas and reframing problems. The brain isn't switching off; it is switching to the job it cannot do while you grind.

This is why the answer arrives in the shower, on a walk, mid-conversation about something unrelated. It is also why the recovery has to be genuinely different from chess — music, a sport, cooking, fiction, people who don't play. Analysing your own games on the rest day is not rest; it is the same network doing the same work on worse fuel.

The board gives you moves. Recovery gives you the player who finds them.

Fitness, sleep and sports psychology are training costs, not luxuries.
They sit on the same bill as the flights, the entry fees and the coaching — and for most Indian juniors, that bill is paid by their family.
